What is rightsizing in cloud computing?
Rightsizing is matching a cloud resource to the workload it actually runs, so you stop paying for capacity you never use. It means downsizing an oversized instance, database, or container to a smaller, cheaper option that still meets real demand. Rightsizing is usually the largest source of cloud savings, because most resources are provisioned for a peak that rarely arrives.
What is AWS rightsizing?
AWS rightsizing is analyzing your EC2, RDS, and other resources against real utilization and moving each to the smallest instance type that handles its load. AWS Compute Optimizer offers native recommendations, but they cover AWS only. Costanalyst computes rightsizing across AWS, GCP, and Azure from p95 utilization and shows the monthly dollars each change frees.
How does EC2 rightsizing work?
EC2 rightsizing reads CPU, memory, and network metrics over a representative window, finds instances running well below their provisioned size, and recommends a smaller instance family or type. The safe approach uses a high-water-mark like p95 rather than the average, so you downsize to real peak demand and do not trade cost for throttling or outages.
Why use p95 utilization instead of average for rightsizing?
The average hides spikes, so sizing to it risks throttling or an outage when real demand peaks. The p95 captures the high-water mark you actually hit 95 percent of the time, which is a realistic ceiling to size against. Using p95 lets you cut overprovisioning aggressively while leaving headroom for normal bursts, so the savings do not cost you performance.
Does rightsizing affect performance?
Done from real utilization it should not, because you size to the workload peak, not below it. The risk comes from rightsizing on averages or stale data.
