Datadog Cloud Cost Management is priced as a percentage of the cloud and SaaS spend it monitors, not per host. Datadog publishes Pro at $5 per $1,000 of monitored spend per month billed annually ($7.20 on-demand) and Enterprise at $10 per $1,000 per month billed annually ($15 on-demand). That works out to about 0.5% of your bill on Pro and 1% on Enterprise, rising to 1.5% if you pay on-demand. A free tier, Datadog Cost Visibility, exists but only shows what you spend on Datadog itself.

That last sentence is the one that trips people up, and the per-host confusion is worse. Most comparison articles you will find state a per-host figure for Cloud Cost Management, usually around $8 per host per month. That number does not appear anywhere on Datadog's pricing page. Per-host pricing is how Datadog charges for Infrastructure Monitoring, which is a different product. The cost module runs on a completely different meter, and if you budget on the wrong one you will be out by an order of magnitude in either direction depending on how many hosts you run.

How much does Datadog Cloud Cost Management cost?

Three tiers, and the gap between them matters more than the headline rates suggest.

The word "starting" appears next to both paid tiers on Datadog's own page, so treat these as list prices before any negotiated commitment. The on-demand penalty is the largest proportional difference on the table: paying month to month rather than committing annually costs 44% more on Pro and 50% more on Enterprise.

What does that actually cost at my cloud spend?

This is the arithmetic worth doing before a renewal call, because the percentage model behaves very differently at different sizes. Multiply your monthly cloud and SaaS spend by 0.005 for Pro and 0.01 for Enterprise.

Two things about this table are worth sitting with. First, none of these figures include the rest of your Datadog contract. Cloud Cost Management is a module, and it is priced on top of Infrastructure Monitoring, APM, Log Management and everything else you already buy. Second, the meter runs on the number you are trying to reduce. Cut your cloud bill by 30% and the tool that helped you do it gets 30% cheaper, which sounds elegant until you notice the reverse: a business growing its infrastructure spend 50% a year is signing up for a cost line that grows 50% a year alongside it, forever, with no additional value delivered for the increase.

Is Datadog Cloud Cost Management free?

There is a free tier and it is genuinely useful, but not for the job most people are shopping for. Datadog Cost Visibility costs nothing and includes cost data in dashboards and notebooks, cost monitors, anomaly detection, forecasting, budgets and access through the Datadog MCP server. The limitation is stated plainly on the pricing page: it is limited to Datadog costs only. It watches your Datadog invoice, not your AWS or Azure one.

That is a real product for a real problem, because Datadog bills have a habit of surprising people, and having spike alerts on your observability spend is worth switching on. It is simply not cloud cost management in the sense the category name implies. Reading cloud provider bills starts at Pro.

What is the difference between Pro and Enterprise?

The rate doubles, so the question is whether the extra features are ones you will actually reach for. Based on Datadog's published feature matrix, the split lands like this.

The line that decides this for most buyers is custom allocation rules. Pro gives you basic rules without split; Enterprise gives you allocation split by a Datadog metric. If your problem is a shared cluster, a shared database or a shared network line that five teams use and nobody will own, splitting by an actual usage metric is the entire point of buying a cost tool, and it is the tier above. Work out whether you need that before you accept a Pro quote, because discovering it in month three is an unplanned doubling.

Hierarchical budgets are the second one. Flat budgets are fine for a single team. The moment finance wants a budget per business unit that rolls up into a departmental total, you are on Enterprise.

What else do I have to buy for it to work?

Datadog answers this directly in its own FAQ, and the answer is a qualified yes. Some capabilities, specifically container cost allocation and compute optimization recommendations, require Infrastructure Monitoring and Container Monitoring. Those are separate products with separate meters. Infrastructure Monitoring is published at $15 per host per month billed annually, or $18 on-demand, with Enterprise at $23 and $27.

For a container-heavy estate this changes the comparison completely. If the reason you want the cost module is to work out which Kubernetes namespace is burning the compute budget, price Cloud Cost Management, Infrastructure Monitoring and Container Monitoring together across every host in the cluster, then compare that total against a standalone tool. That is the honest number, and it is usually not the one in the proposal.

How does Datadog compare to other cloud cost tools on price?

The useful comparison in this category is not feature by feature, it is by pricing shape, because the shape determines what happens to the line item over three years. There are four shapes in the market and only one of them is indexed to your bill.

Most of the enterprise names here quote rather than publish, which is the norm across cloud cost management software pricing generally. Finout is the most explicit about why this matters, describing its model as a flat fee tied to a committed cloud and AI spend tier rather than a per-seat charge or a percentage that fluctuates with usage. Vantage makes the same argument more bluntly, describing its plans as fixed-rate plans that do not contribute to your cost problems. Both are aimed at exactly the objection this page is about.

None of that makes the Datadog model wrong. At $25,000 a month of cloud spend, Pro is $125 a month, which is cheaper than most standalone tools and comes with correlation to your traces and logs that nothing standalone offers. The model is simply front-loaded in the buyer's favor and back-loaded in Datadog's, so where you sit on that curve decides the answer.

Does the price change for Azure and AWS?

No, the rate is the same regardless of provider, but the setup requirements differ enough to affect whether you can buy it at all. Datadog Cloud Cost Management covers AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, plus SaaS and AI cost integrations including OpenAI and Anthropic, and supports the FinOps FOCUS format with 15 months of retention.

Coverage breadth is the one place the module beats most standalone options outright, and it is worth comparing against the wider field of multi-cloud cost management tools before assuming a single-cloud specialist will do. On AWS you need billing access, the Datadog AWS integration, and a Cost and Usage Report set to hourly granularity with resource IDs included, split cost allocation data enabled and automatic refresh turned on, delivered as GZIP or Parquet. CUR 2.0 is recommended. Datadog says it may take between 48 and 72 hours for all available data to populate after a complete report is generated.

Azure is where a real gate sits. Datadog requires both an Actual Cost export and an Amortized Cost export, delivered to a storage container with file partitioning enabled on each, read by an app registration holding the Storage Blob Data Reader role, with Cost Management Reader access. Only Microsoft Customer Agreements and Enterprise Agreements are supported. Pay-as-you-go subscriptions cannot be set up at all, because they only produce usage-only exports rather than the cost exports Datadog needs. Datadog also does not support the Overwrite data setting on those exports, and the 2019-10-01 dataset version is not supported. Expect 48 to 72 hours for data to stabilize.

If your Azure estate is pay-as-you-go, that is not a pricing question, it is a hard stop, and moving to an MCA is a commercial project with its own timeline. What questions should I ask before signing?

Four, in this order, and all of them in writing.

What is the total across every product the feature I want depends on? Cloud Cost Management alone is not the number if container allocation is the requirement. Ask for the combined figure across the cost module, Infrastructure Monitoring and Container Monitoring at your real host count.

What happens to the rate when my spend doubles? A percentage model with no cap means the answer is that it doubles too. Ask whether the rate steps down at higher tiers and get the thresholds in the contract rather than in an email.

Which tier does my allocation model actually need? Bring your hardest shared cost to the demo, a shared cluster or a shared data pipeline, and make them allocate it live. If it needs split by metric, you need Enterprise and the quote should say so from the start. This is the same test worth running against any cloud cost allocation software on your shortlist.

What is the on-demand exposure if we do not commit? The gap is 44% on Pro and 50% on Enterprise. If your spend is seasonal or you are mid-migration and genuinely cannot forecast, that flexibility has a price and you should know it going in.

When is Datadog Cloud Cost Management the right buy?

When you already pay for Datadog, your cloud bill is under roughly $100,000 a month, and the question you keep failing to answer is which deploy or which service caused the spike. That correlation between a cost line and the trace, log or metric that explains it is the one thing nothing standalone reproduces, and at that spend level half a percent is a small price for it.

It stops being the right buy at scale, in a pay-as-you-go Azure estate, when SaaS subscriptions and non-cloud vendor spend make up a large share of the technology budget, or when the cost data has to go to a finance team that does not have and will not get a Datadog seat. Those are the four situations where a standalone tool wins on merit rather than on price, and where a flat-fee vendor also happens to be cheaper.
